Miss Colorado, Audra Dobbs, from Glennwood Springs CO, will join us on August 20th-- Rodeo Finals
On August 20th Miss Rodeo Colorado 2009 Audra Dobbs, of Glenwood Springs, will appear at the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo. Miss Rodeo Colorado is the ideal western American young woman. She symbolizes the youth of Colorado who wish to further promote the sport of rodeo and our western heritage.
As a representative of the Centennial State and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Audra has spent the last year traveling to various rodeos and western celebrations throughout the United States. On August 6th, she makes her first appearance in front of her many friends and family in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The 24 year old daughter of Ann Martin, of Glenwood Springs, is a proud Colorado cowgirl and fifth generation horse woman, Audra began riding as soon as she could sit on a horse. She grew up competing in 4-H, horse shows and rodeos. This gave Audra her passionate appreciation and love for the greatest sport on earth - rodeo! As Colorado’s first lady of rodeo, Audra has devoted this year to promoting and educating others about Colorado and the rich western heritage.
In December of 2009, she’ll join the nation’s best cowboys and cowgirls in Las Vegas, Nevada for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo where she’ll proudly represent Colorado in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Come out to the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo on August 6th to welcome Audra back to her roots.
Saddle Bronc Riding - Special Event August 13,2009
It’s a kicking, bucking, whirlwind dance -- be sure not to miss this week’s special performance of Saddle Bronc Riding.
Originally based on the necessary horse breaking of a working cowboy, saddle bronc riding is regarded as the classic test of finesse and brawn. The saddle bronc rider grips a simple braided rein attached to a leather halter worn by the horse. The rider lifts on the rein and attempts to find a rhythm with the animal by spurring forwards and backwards with his feet. For balance and grip, saddle bronc riders try to squeeze their knees and thighs tight against the horse’s shoulders. Their free hand cannot touch anything but air. Get the rhythm with us on Thursday August 13, 2009
Bike to the Rodeo
The Carbondale Wild West Rodeo, in partnership with the Town of Carbondale, RFTA and Garfield County, have built a ramp and a crosswalk to connect the Rio Grande Trail to the Gus Darien Arena Grounds. The new ramp is pictured here. States, Jeff Jackel, Director or Recreation for the Town of Carbondale “The work was completed last week just in time for the first Wild West Rodeo event. The idea behind creating this trail spur to the rodeo grounds entrance was to encourage more Carbondale citizens to either bike or walk to the Rodeo instead of driving. The Town has purchased an additional 20 space bike rack that now allows bicyclists to lock and secure their bikes upon their arrival. Garfield County is in the process of striping and signing the County Road 100 for safety reasons in letting approaching motorists know that there is a pedestrian/bike road crossing ahead of them and to use caution.
2009 Carbondale Wild West Rodeo Arena Parking Policy
The Carbondale Wild West Rodeo (CWWRA) Board and the Town of Carbondale has received a significant amount of feedback regarding the parking of vehicles around the arena fence and has enacted the following parking policy.
Parking for the Thursday night rodeo will be allowed no earlier than 6:00am on the day of the rodeo. All vehicles must be removed from the rodeo grounds by 12:00 noon on the Friday after the rodeo. Vehicles that do not adhere to this policy will be towed at the owner’s expense.
This policy was developed for numerous reasons.
- Many vehicles were parked at the arena for the whole rodeo season last year. This did not allow all spectators the opportunity to park along the fence.
- There are other events at the rodeo grounds during the summer other than the rodeo. Spectators of these events were burdened with having to park around existing, empty vehicles.
- Many spectators wanted the Board to sell these spots along the fence for the whole rodeo season. The Board feels strongly about making the opportunity affordable for all, which is why the Board chose not to create “premium” parking along the arena fence.
- Many of the vehicles that were left for the whole rodeo season in 2008 were vehicles that were not running, which made the arena grounds look like a junk yard. The Board was not pleased with this appearance.
- Mowing and weed trimming along the arena perimeter fence by town staff is difficult with vehicles parked along the fence.
This policy is not meant to be focused on any individual or any group of people. The Board would appreciate self-compliance with this new policy. Please remember that the CWWRA Board is comprised of VOLUNTEERS and is trying to create the best event possible for everyone who attends. Parking is an issue every year and we are trying to address it in a fair and direct manner with your cooperation.
Questions regarding this policy can be directed to the Board.
